What's the future for Game of Thrones?

The Game of Thrones TV series is fast catching up with the published books, with filming progressing at a much quicker rate than George R. R. Marting can churn out the doorstop-sized books that the series is based on.

The author's feelings about being pressured to go more quickly are vocal, and heartfelt, so he's unlikely to get any faster just to please TV show fans.

So, what will happen when it catches up? Will they have to take a pause while they wait for the books to be released, or will they come up with some way around the problem?

I doubt that the author will give the rights for them to write their own material away from the books, so I guess they'll just have to wait. It is a bit of an unusual situation though, as most series don't film until the books are finished.
Supposedly George has a plan for the show, a way of making sure the show doesn't actually catch up to the books. I can't remember where I read that though.
All good things come to an end eventually so I guess we must prepare for the worst - eventually.
