Did you know TV shows are not allowed to show someone smoking a cigarette on network television? Yup, itís true, and itís raised a few eyebrows recently thanks to the upcoming Constantine series on NBC. The source material comes from the DC comic book Hellblazer, and in the comics Constantine is a constant chain smoker.
What do you think, should smoking continue to be banned on network TV, or should it be allowed, as smoking is part of our society?
If you want shows to show a true image of today's then there are going to be characters who smoke. Not every show will need characters that smoke, but some call for it. I think it is silly to ban it. Why not ban crime dramas from covering drugs and murder while you're at it?
I agree with Bryony. TV will not show drinking or drug use, however they will elude to drinking and drug use, but not smoking at all. I'm not saying we should glorify it, it is a very unhealthy habit and the last thing we need is to show it in a positive light but in some roles, it is an appropriate trait.
I didn't realize that it was banned! I have no problem with smoking being shown of TV, like DGR said, it is part of society. In Constantine, it is crucial to the character to show him smoking and to not show that would be detrimental to the series.
