Netflix

Freed from the shackles of the networks, and the advertisers, some have argued that they’ve been able to create television that would never have made it on…well…television.

What do you think?

Do you think shows like House of Cards, and Orange is the New Black are raising the bar for other TV creators, and improving the quality of the programmes available to us?

I think Netflix has drastically improved television, not just by raising the bar, but by forcing networks to release new content all year round. Networks used to rely on reruns in the off-season, and although they still do to some degree, but they have been forced to adapt to a changing marketplace. Viewers can now rewatch a series whenever the please thanks to Netflix and that has lowered the value of old content on network television. Thanks to this development, we now have shows like Orphan Black, Hannibal and many other short season summer shows. On top of that, they are creating quality shows and showing that there is another model that works.
I wouldn't know, I'm not even sure what Netflix is.
