Todayís big news in TV, Phil Robertson, of A&Eís Duck Dynasty, has been suspended from the show after making religious-based remarks that condemn gay men. American media has been having a field day with this story. Some condemning Robertson, others saying Robertson has a constitutional right to free speech. This is not a subject I am well versed in, I donít watch the show. I donít really know anything about the Robertsonís family values, but this story has been blown up so much that I wanted to bring it to the community and see what you guys think.
If you havenít heard the hype, you can read some of the comments over at Huffington Post
Do you think A&E made the right move in suspending Robertson? If youíre a fan of the show, has Robertsonís remarks changed your views on Duck Dynasty?
I don't agree with his comments but I do support free speech. I don't, however, support fake attempts to placate public concern. A&E was never committed to taking a stand against his comments. They already had more episodes filmed and all thier "suspension" did was give more fuel to the fire and galvanise the viewing audience. Well played marketing team!
I'd never heard of the show until this controversy hit the media. There seems to have been a lot of whinging about this violating their right to free speech, which it doesn't. All the right to free speech means is that the US government won't throw its citizens in jail for speaking their minds. That doesn't mean there will be no repurcussions for doing so. Robertson had a right to spew ignorant hateful words and A & E had a right to suspend him for it.
